2011 Summer National Senior Games presented by Humana were a rousing success! 

The 2011 Summer National Senior Games presented by Humana came to a close on June 30 when the last disc slid down the shuffleboard court at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Chairman of the Board of Directors of the 2011 Houston Local Organizing Committee and President and CEO of Houston’s Memorial Hermann Health Care System Dan Wolterman stated, “Houston was honored to be selected as the host city for the 2011 Summer National Senior Games. Since this selection in 2008, we have worked very hard to provide these incredible athletes wonderful competition venues and an exceptional experience in our great city. On behalf of the Houston Local Organizing Committee, I want to express our gratitude to the athletes and visitors for coming to our city.”

Athletes of the Month: Charles J. Gatti, Jr. and Graham Johnston 

Two athletes participating in the National Senior Games in Houston were inducted into the NSGA’s Hall of Fame: bowler Charles J. Gatti, Jr. and swimmer Graham Johnston.   READ MORE>


Games set for Sept. 28-Oct. 2 in Rochester, N.Y.; sports include ice hockey, pickleball, speedskating and curling

The next great National Senior Games Association event is on the horizon. The 2011 Winter National Senior Games takes place in Rochester, N.Y., from Sept. 28-Oct. 2. Sports in the event include ice hockey, pickleball, speedskating and curling. Anyone age 50+ as of Dec. 31, 2011, may register for the event. Note also that hockey goalies for 50+ teams may be 45+ years old as of Dec. 31, 2011.  READ MORE>

Allan Tissenbaum is an orthopedic surgeon in the Pittsburgh, Pa., area. He is also a Masters athlete and a former Masters world champion in the 100-meter dash. He will answer questions by senior athletes about sports health and fitness.

How the shoe fits

Outside of nutrition, the biggest area of misconception and misinformation in fitness is running shoes. Let’s set the record straight on some key points. First of all, how do you determine what's the right fit for you? My recommendation: go to a store that specializes in running shoes. Staff members at these stores are usually competitive runners who know the sport and have been trained to do a gait analysis and get you into the right category – and ultimately the right shoe.  READ MORE>

Here are some important news items from the NSGA:
Five world records were set in Houston at the National Senior Games. All of the records were set in track and field:

  • Kay Glynn set the W55 pole vault mark at 3.08 meters
  • Johnnye Valien set the W85 pole vault mark at 1.20 meters
  • James Kales set the M95 triple jump mark at 4.20 meters
  • Lillian Webb set the W95 long jump mark at .96 meters
  • Trent Lane set the M100 hammer throw mark at 11.32 meters
